PART 3

Last week, lots of foxes, raccoons and lemurs answered Lemy & Rascal's secret announcement on the Critters' National Network (CNN) and made their way to the special underground base that the two heroes had built for them on the deserted island. Optimistically*, both Lemy & Rascal believed that Mr Weasel would not find out about the secret base.

Unfortunately, our stripey-tailed pair were wrong. Mr Weasel was smarter than that, and intercepted one of the broadcasts late in the week. By checking the maps, he was able to make a guess as to where the island might be. Within hours, he was able to mobilise** his entire fleet of Muck Monsters early one morning.
They gathered alongside Mr Weasel's submarine and made their way to the island. However, because these creatures were not water-dwellers, they had to surface every now and then to get air. So, if anyone was watching them approach the island, they would have seen a whole bunch of muck monsters suddenly popping out from under the waves.

(Muck Monsters coming up for air)

Back on the island, things were normal and the animals were preparing for breakfast. They did not suspect a thing, except that the waves that were coming up to the beach, were stronger than usual. Can you guess why? Yes, it was because the muck monsters, by coming up to breathe and then going underwater again, were creating the waves.

Lemy was on tree-top duty that morning, and he used his telescope to look all over the island. He was still trying to see if he could spot Lemu, the girl-lemur he had once met at Martoc.

Suddenly, he spotted the submarine. And then the muck monsters....

"Oh No!" said Lemy. "Quick everyone, back into the hideouts!"

The others didn't need a second warning. Everyone scrambled into the base and cleared up all trace of their ever having been there at all.

"That's Good!" thought Lemy to himself. "Now, even if that old Mr Weasel comes by, he'll never find us anyway. But where's Rascal? He doesn't seem to be anywhere, and I'm sure he wouldn't have gone into hiding too."

Lemy scanned the whole area, but just couldn't see Rascal at all.

And then, looking further out to sea, Lemy spotted his raccoon friend - up in the sky in his latest creation. It was the Ice-Cube bomber that Rascal had been working on for the last couple of days. It flew like a propellered plane, but had a bomb rack which dropped ice-cubes. The back of the plane in fact, was a kind of refrigerator. Rascal usually had some strange ideas, and he believed that the muck monsters wouldn't be able to stand "ice".

"Bombs Away!" shouted the raccoon gleefully, as he released the first set of ice-cubes on the unsuspecting muck monsters below.

As he turned away, Rascal pressed a special button on the instrument panel in his plane, and a cloaking device*** was turned on. His aircraft was completely invisible, although he wasn't. But, being so high up in the clouds, it made little difference because the submarine below wouldn't have been able to spot him anyway.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some new words to learn this week:

*    optimistically - that's a word you would use when you think positively or when you tend to believe that things will go right rather
     than go wrong.
**   mobilise - to get people (or things) to come together within a short time, in order to do something.
*** cloaking device - something which makes you or your vehicle appear invisible to everyone else.
