PART 3 - BIG BUGS

RETURN TO MAIN MENU

Lemy and Rascal hid quietly behind the train engine - they were both afraid of what they had seen.

The creature that had made that hole in the ground, was obviously large and scary.
"Why do these things always happen to us??!!…" wailed Lemy in a very upset voice.
(That's because we want to keep the story interesting, Lemy)

"WHO SAID THAT!!!" whispered Lemy, looking around fearfully. It was that strange voice in his head again.

"Oh don't be such a panicky lemur," said Rascal knowingly. "That's just the voice of the editor...in your head. He's telling the story afterall....anyway, let's just worry about what's going to come out of that hole shall we?" said Rascal reassuringly.

The two of them focused* (1) their attention on the hole, and soon saw something emerging from the ground. It had long hairy legs, and was making a low growling sound as it came into view.

"I think I'm going to faint..." said Lemy weakly.

"Don't you dare faint on me, Lemy" said Rascal sternly

He was just as frightened and worried as Lemy was, but he didn't want to show it.

Lemy made an extra special effort, to NOT faint. He stood quietly with Rascal behind the train's engine area. As the creature slowly emerged from the darkness of the hole, it was quite obvious* (2) that it was not very happy to be in a bright area.
With its eyes half shut, the creature tried to use its sense of smell to track down the lemur and raccoon.
"Don't make a sound, Lemy" whispered Rascal. "It can't see us because the sun's shining too brightly. Maybe we can pretend to not be here, and it may just go back into the hole..."
Lemy whispered back. "I don't think I can keep quiet...because I'm going to....I'm going to....ahhh....             AHHHH.....AHHHH...CHOOOOOO!!!

Lemy had released the biggest sneeze of his life, and he was quite proud of it....until he realised what he had done. The creature was facing him directly.

THEN, the lemur fainted.

"Oh No...." said Rascal, as the creature headed towards them.  He quickly grabbed Lemy's legs and dragged him away from the train, trying to wake his friend up. The creature was already about to climb into the train's cabin* (3)

"Lemy!! Wake up..." shouted Rascal, even though he knew that the creature was nearby.

Lemy woke up quickly, and together with Rascal, got ready to scramble back along the tracks to where they had come from.

The spider-like creature heard Rascal's shout, and headed their way, but it just couldn't stand the heat from the direct sunlight.

"Look Rascal, "said Lemy. "That thing seems to be trying to avoid the sun for some reason."

"Maybe, it's one of those nocturnal* (4) types that just can't stand the brightness of light." reasoned Rascal. "And that means we're quite safe from it because it must return to its darkness soon!"

Rascal of course, was quite correct. The creature continued to stumble around for a while, but eventually gave up because the heat was far too strong for it.
With a loud roar of rage, the creature headed back to the deep hole, and crawled down the dark tunnel.
"Hooray!! We're safe..." they shouted gleefully. But their joy and relief didn't last very long. The creature came out of the hole again....this time though, it was wearing.......???????

AND THAT, IS THE END OF PART 3, CLICK HERE FOR PART 4

Some new words to learn this week:
(*1) focused - to concentrate on something or in this case, to look for a long time only at one spot.

(*2) obvious - when something is quite clear, we say that it's "obvious". For example, if we see a cat, we can say that it is "obviously a cat and not a mouse" (or a Lemur and not a Raccoon)

(*3) cabin - in this story, the cabin refers to the front part of the steam train where the engine is. It is the place  a sound that is low, in this case, more like the growl of a bear or something as big.

(*4) nocturnal - something (an animal, bird or insect for example) that prefers the dark or that can only go about in the dark.
