Lemy and Rascal made their way slowly and quietly down
the hole which looked more like a crater*(1) in the ground.
They were both afraid of what might come out to get them,
but they were curious all the same.
"Bet
it’s a muck monster…"
teased Rascal.
"DON’T
SAY THAT!!!" whispered Lemy loudly. "It’ll hear us, whatever
it is."
|
| They moved quickly down the tunnel and reached the bottom
quickly. The stripey pair then worked in silence for the
rest of the journey through the hole.
It
was clear that whatever it was that had made the hole,
was pretty nasty* (2).
|
 |
The whole place was hot…and dark.
Fortunately,
Lemy had a flashlight so that they could see what was
ahead.
|
| Suddenly, they heard a low-pitched* (3) growl
followed by the sound of something scurrying by. As it was
quite dark, they weren’t sure what it was and didn’t even
get a good look as to which direction the creature was heading.
Lemy used the flashlight but only managed to get rid of
some the darkness.
"I don’t like this,
Lemy" said Rascal. "Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to
go down after this creature.
Lemy nodded his
head but when he turned to face Rascal, the flashlight
was accidentally knocked from his hand. It clattered further
down the hole and they both heard it hit a rock. The wildly
flashing lights were suddenly gone, and the whole place
was plunged in darkness.
|
Lemy and Rascal
stood very still and dared not move at all.
"Pssst….Lemy, is
that you??" whispered Rascal to the pair of eyes on his
left.
"Yes," the pair
of eyes whispered back. "Errr…..is that you on my right?
Or are you…err…on my left?"
"I’m on your right,
Lemy" replied Rascal.
|
"Hmmmm…..if you’re on my right," said
Lemy
"Then who belongs to the pair of eyes
that I can
see on my left??"

Rrrrrrrr.......grrrrrrr!!
|
"Oh oh…" whispered Rascal.
"I think that’s a you-know-what!"
"Are you ready?" they
whispered to each other.
 |
"THEN,
LET’s GO!!"
They scrambled*(4)
away as quick as they could, back up the hole and onto
the steam engine. They weren't even going to find out
what it was that made that sound.
But they knew that
it was big, mean and probably dangerous.

AND THAT, IS THE END OF
PART 2, CLICK HERE
FOR PART 3
Some new words to learn this week:
(*1) crater - something like the holes you’d see on the moon, but in this
case, smaller.
(*2) nasty - someone or something that is mean, horrible and even
frightening.
(*3) low-pitched - a sound that is low, in this case, more like the
growl of a bear or something as big.
(*4) scrambled - to move very quickly - sometimes its because you're
in a great hurry, and sometimes its because you're scared or worried.
